When is World Aids Day? World AIDS Day is a global day of awareness about HIV and AIDS. It is held annually on the 1st of December. This year marks the 21st anniversary of World AIDS Day.
First observed in 1988, World AIDS Day was initiated by health ministers from around the world who called for a spirit of social tolerance and a greater awareness of HIV/AIDS on an international scale.
"I AM" is the theme for 2009 World AIDS Day on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 which urges governments to keep the commitments they have made to fight the deadly disease. The slogans for the World AIDS Day materials were designed to underscore the importance of awareness of human rights.
The red ribbon is worn as a sign of support for people living with HIV. Wearing a red ribbon for World AIDS Day is a simple and powerful way to show support and challenge the stigma and prejudice surrounding HIV and AIDS that prevents us from tackling HIV.
