Adelante: Moving Urban Youth Forward is a program based out of Nueva Luz and funded by United Way Services. For the past three years Nueva Luz has been successful in recruiting youth to participate in activities and events through a former programming effort called R-Life. The Adelante program is a focused product of that successful youth outreach.

What It Is About

Adelante is divided into twelve-week sessions to maximize the personal attention each participant receives and to structure programming during the school year. Participants are recruited from throughout the Cudell neighborhood of Cleveland, where Nueva Luz is located. The purpose of the Adelante program is to provide an afterschool youth program that impacts the positive self-development of its participants.

How We Do It

It uses research on best practice interventions to achieve this goal. Each week, youth come together for discussion and education on personal development, leadership skills, and healthy relationships. Adelante participants develop supportive relationships with Youth Development Coaches through one-on-one mentoring. These Coaches are adult men who serve as positive role models to the youth.

Martial Arts Program

Additionally, participants train with a Sifu of Martial Arts weekly. Martial Arts is the focal point of the Adelante program because of its valuable lessons in self-discipline, focus, personal development, and goal achievement. The participant’s family is invited to a meaningful graduation ceremony to celebrate the youth’s accomplishments.

Community Program

Adelante participants are involved in a minimum of one community service opportunity per session. Participants volunteer through both ongoing and one-time volunteer projects in the community. Each twelve-week Adelante session also includes at least one field trip to a destination within Cuyahoga County. The field trip aims to enrich participants' lives by broadening their experiences beyond the immediate surroundings of their daily lives.

MYCAMP

MyCAMP 4 Girls is also offered on a twelve (12) week cycle with a current capacity to serve up to ten (10) youth per program cycle. The program is conducted four (4) days a week with occasional weekend activities to accommodate field trips and service learning opportunities. In particular, program hours are: Tuesdays through Fridays, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. with tutoring, monitored fitness classes, arts and crafts, team building activities and facilitation of the Becoming a Responsible Teen (BART) curriculum, an HIV prevention curriculum designed primarily for minority adolescents.
