Nueva Luz is an active partner in the Cudell neighborhood of Cleveland where it has provided services since 1999. Collaboration with community organizations is ongoing and community outreach takes many forms. Nueva Luz engages the community in many ways including:

Annual Bike Safety Rodeo

Partnering with Cudell Improvement's Crime Prevention Program and Councilman Jay Westbrook, the bicycle rodeo teaches riding tips to youth and provides free safety helmets.

Festival of Light

Each year since 1999, Nueva Luz holds a Festival of Light community celebration in the adjacent parking lot. The festival is the organization's way of giving back to the community and features fun activities for children and youth, free food and lively music. Health awareness and disease prevention information and testing are also available to participants. It's fun, it's free, and it happens every June!

MyCom

In 2008, Nueva Luz joined with Denison Avenue United Church of Christ, Councilman Jay Westbrook and other community partners to apply for the Cleveland Foundation's Youth Development Initiative (YDI). The proposal was chosen as one of six pilot programs for a collaborative youth assessment process, now called MyCom. The process will assist the Ward 18/Cudell neighborhood in assessing, supporting and connecting activities that further youth development.

Playground Build

In August 2008, a state of the art playground was constructed at the corner of West 89th Street and Willard. Nueva Luz, in partnership with Cudell Improvement, Inc., Councilman Jay Westbrook and KaBOOM! Inc., recruited many business and organization supporters and hosted volunteer day in which hundreds of community helpers worked together to build a drug-free playspace for the neighborhood to enjoy. The playground is open to the public and is a welcome resource to the neighborhood.

In September 2008, the playground was dedicated to Pastor Andy Anderson as a tribute to his loving concern for the children in the community and renamed "Pastor Andy's Playground." Pastor Anderson co-founded Proyecto Luz with Max Rodas in 1999 and, until his retirement in 2008, remained very active in community engagement activities.

Trunk-or-Treat

Nueva Luz hosts an annual Trunk-or-Treat event in the adjacent parking lot as a safe alternative for children in the West Tech community to celebrate Halloween. Candy is donated by individuals, area businesses and community organizations. These "treats" are then passed out by volunteers from the trunks of cars parked in the parking lot. .
